Brutal Legend: E3 Impressions

brutalBrutal Legend was playable on the E3 floor and I didn’t know what to expect when I picked it up. (I’ve tried to ignore the press on this one knowing that Tim Schaeffer doesn’t make crappy games).

What I learned today is that Brutal Legend is much like God of War or Devil May Cry. It relies heavily on melee combat and has secondary game sequences such as driving and RTS. You use a battle axe and a guitar to fight your enemies with numerous combos and charge attacks.

This game is metal, oh so metal. The landscape is littered with skeletons and skulls. You use your guitar to thrash metal and summon lightning and hellfire to destroy your enemies. Jack Black plays a huge role in it and what I heard out of the voice-overs was pretty funny. The cut scenes were also fantastic and hilarious. The extra development time that Schaeffer’s team had looks to have allowed them more polish time.

It looks visually astonishing at points and the tiny nuances in the cutscenes really play to the humor’s strengths. This one is a must buy, and hopefully everyone will, so we can keep getting Double Fine games.
